Privacy policy

Quixplain is a browser extension and website (quixplain.it) that explains text you select on the web. It is operated by Aiakaki AS (Norwegian org. no. 937 074 212, "we"), which is the data controller for the personal data described here. Questions or requests: privacy@aiakaki.com.
The short version: Quixplain only reads a page when you ask it to. What you send is used to answer you, and is not sold, used for advertising, or used to train AI models.
What we collect
- Account data. Your email address, and your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google. We also keep your display name, your answer language, your plan and billing status, and, if you have paid, the id of your customer record at Stripe. Your email also appears next to things you share and comment on, so the people you share with can see who it came from.
- Text you ask about. When you use an action (explain, translate, check message and so on), the extension sends the selected text, a short passage around it, basic page details (title, site name, section headings) and your settings such as answer language, so the answer fits the context. Page actions such as Summarize page send the readable text of the current page. This happens only when you trigger an action; the extension does not read or send pages in the background.
- Email and chat apps. Check this email sends the email you are reading: subject, sender, body and the real targets of its links, so the check can tell a genuine message from a fake one. In a messaging app such as Discord, Slack, Teams or WhatsApp on the web, Explain and Prepare answer also send the part of the conversation that is loaded on your screen up to your selection (at most about 6,000 characters). This can include other people's names and messages. It is used only to write your answer and is not stored. If you set your name in chats, it is sent along so the reply knows which messages are yours. “Insert in chat” only places the draft in your message box; Quixplain never sends messages for you.
- Web searches. Fact-check, Reviews, Find better price, Deep research and boosted questions about a page search the web. The selected text, the product or place details and the passage around them are used as the search material.
- Your library. Snippets you save (the text, the answer, the page title and link), notes, comments, folders and pages, documents and images you upload, deep research reports and AI documents, and what you share with friends. Files are stored privately and are visible only to you and the people you share their folder with.
- Price and review checks. When you use Find better price or Reviews, we send the product's name, brand, model or barcode and price (or the name you selected and the passage around it) to search the web. Your browser then opens the shops or review sites it finds in the background, without your cookies, to confirm their current prices and ratings. Nothing is bought and no personal data is sent to those sites.
- Text from image. When you use it, the part of the screen you picked is sent as an image so the text in it can be read. It is not stored unless you save the result.
- Maps. When you choose Map on a selected address, the address is sent to Google Maps to show it, and Google's own privacy policy applies to that map. Quixplain doesn't store it.
- Snapshots. When you take a snapshot, we store an image of the area of the page you picked, the text inside that area (so you can search for it), and the page title and link. The image is taken only when you start a snapshot, contains only what was visible on your screen, and may include personal information shown on that page, so pick the area with care. Snapshots are private to you and the people you share them with.
- Friends and invites. Your friend list, the email addresses of people you invite, and a log of the emails sent on your behalf (recipient address, kind and time). The log is used to limit how many emails one account can send and is kept for 90 days.
- Billing. If you buy a plan, Stripe collects your card details and billing address and tells us which plan you have and whether it is paid. We never see your full card number.
- Feedback. Messages you send through the feedback form, and answer ratings, which may include the text and answer you rated.
- Usage records. For each request: the feature used, the model, token counts, number of web searches, response time, whether it succeeded and the extension version. We use this to enforce daily limits and understand cost. It does not include the text you selected.
- Error logs. When something fails, we record the technical details (which function, the error, the extension version and your user id) so we can fix it. Error logs are kept for up to 90 days.
- Enterprise enquiries. What you type into the contact form on the front page: name, work email, company, team size and your message.
- Settings (your quick actions, language, post style, your name in chats, recently picked colors) are stored locally in your browser. The eye-dropper, QR codes and Read aloud of a page in its own language work entirely in your browser; reading a summary or a translation sends the page text, like Summarize page.
Signing in uses a cookie that keeps you logged in on quixplain.it. It is needed for the site to work and is not used for tracking. We run no analytics or advertising scripts.
What we do not do
- We do not store the text you ask about, or take screenshots, unless you save something to your library, take a snapshot, or include it in feedback.
- We do not collect browsing history, and we do not track you across sites.
- We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising or credit decisions.
- We do not use your content to train AI models, and neither does our AI provider.
Who processes the data
- Anthropic (Claude) generates the answers and performs the web searches. Requests go through our servers to Anthropic's API. Anthropic does not train on API data and keeps it only for a limited time for abuse monitoring.
- Supabase hosts the database, file storage, sign-in and server functions in the EU (Ireland, eu-west-1).
- Vercel hosts the quixplain.it website.
- Stripe handles payments and billing details.
- Resend delivers our emails: sign-in links, invitations, shares and notifications.
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google, and for the map when you choose Map.
Anthropic, Vercel, Stripe and Resend are based in the United States and may process data there. These transfers are covered by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision.
Sharing
Things you share with a friend are visible to that friend; folders you share as "Can edit" can be added to by them, and what they add is part of the folder. If you create an AI document from a shared folder, everything in it, including what others added, is sent to Anthropic to write the document. If you invite someone by email, we create a link with a short preview of the shared snippet; anyone with that link can see that preview. Social posts are drafted for you and only published if you post them yourself.
Legal basis
We process your data to provide the service you signed up for and to bill you for it (contract). We keep usage records, error logs and feedback to keep the service working, secure and affordable (legitimate interest). We keep billing records because bookkeeping law requires it (legal obligation).
How long we keep it
- Your account and library, including snapshots and files: until you delete them or your account.
- Usage records: 24 months.
- Error logs and the log of emails sent through Quixplain: 90 days.
- Billing records: as long as Norwegian bookkeeping law requires, currently five years. These are kept by Stripe and in our accounts, not in your Quixplain account.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account yourself from the account page on quixplain.it. This removes your account, your library, your files and snapshots and your shares at once, and cancels any subscription. Billing records are kept as required by law. Things you shared with others disappear from their libraries too.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, or object to how we use it, by emailing privacy@aiakaki.com. If you ask for an export, we send your data as a JSON file within 30 days. You can also complain to your data protection authority (in Norway, Datatilsynet).
Chrome Web Store limited use
Quixplain's use of information received from Chrome APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Page content and screenshots of the visible tab are used only to provide the feature you asked for, is not transferred to third parties except as needed to provide that feature, and is never read by humans except with your consent (for example, in feedback you send), for security reasons, or where the law requires it.
Children
Quixplain is not intended for children under 16.
Changes
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we will tell you in the extension or by email.
